The mainstream mobile phone screens on the market today include: TFT, OLED, AMOLED, SUPER AMOLED, and IPS. Let's take a look at each one.
TFT (Thin Film Transistor): Thin Film Field Effect Transistor. Currently the most widely used screen in the Chinese mainland market, it is a type of active matrix liquid crystal display. It actively controls each individual pixel on the screen, significantly improving response time. It offers vibrant colors, high clarity, and accurate color reproduction, but consumes significant power.
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Display): Known as the "dream display," OLED display technology differs from traditional LCD displays in that it requires no backlight. Instead, it utilizes a very thin coating of organic materials on a glass substrate. When an electric current flows through these materials, they emit light. OLED screens can also be made lighter and thinner, offer wider viewing angles, and consume less power than TFTs. However, they suffer from drawbacks such as a shorter lifespan and difficulty scaling up screen sizes.
AMOLED (Active Matrix/Organic Light Emitting Diode): An active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) panel, part of the OLED family, is an enhanced version of OLED. It boasts excellent features such as self-luminescence, no need for a backlight, high contrast, thinness, wide viewing angle, fast response time, compatibility with flexible panels, a wide operating temperature range, and relatively simple structure and manufacturing processes. It is considered an emerging technology for the next generation of flat-panel displays. Currently, high-end Samsung mobile phones use this type of screen extensively. Its power consumption is comparable to OLED, but it suffers from issues such as a shorter lifespan and low production yield.
SUPER AMOLED (Super Active Matrix/Organic Light Emitting Diode): This panel, part of the OLED family, is an enhanced version of AMOLED. Compared to traditional AMOLED displays, it abandons the touch-sensitive layer + display layer architecture, resulting in more responsive control. Furthermore, the elimination of the glass cover provides better display quality in sunlight. While power consumption is comparable to AMOLED, it also suffers from issues such as a shorter lifespan than TFT and lower production yields.
IPS (ln-Plane Switching): IPS hard screen, improved on the basis of TFT, uses backlight display. Currently, iPhone4 uses this type of screen. Since it is improved on the basis of TFT, it is not outstanding in energy saving. Its power consumption is higher than AMOLED, but slightly lower than TFT.
Summary: After talking about the 5 main types of screens, let's make a comparison based on: power consumption, display effect, and lifespan.
Power consumption: TFT > IPS > OLED ≈ AMOLED ≈ SUPER AMOLED
Display quality: SUPER AMOLED > AMOLED ≈ IPS > OLED > TFT
Lifespan: TFT ≈ IPS > OLED ≈ AMOLED ≈ SUPER AMOLED
You've probably all seen specifications like QVGA and HVGA when looking at phone specs. What do these mean? What do they represent? And how do they relate to screen specifications? Let's take a look.
First, let's take a look at VGA. This term is familiar to everyone, as it represents graphics cards from over a decade ago. In fact, abbreviations containing the letters VGA all represent resolution, and VGA stands for 460 * 640 resolution. Now that we know what VGA stands for, let's list various mainstream resolutions below.
